Cocktail Talk

Craig:

Welcome to CN Consulting's "Cocktail Talk".

Cocktail Talk is a casual monthly newsletter intended to arm you with amusing bits and bytes of information on whats happening in the computer world. Topics sure to break the ice and capture an audience at many a social or business event.

Cocktail Talk is archived on www.cnci.us

Currently, on Cocktail Talk - Fark the RSS

Simply put an RSS feed links to a bunch of websites you tell it to and lets you know when they have something new to offer, all in one place, similar to "following" on Twitter or Facebook. You get a little summary line and decide where to go from there.

RSS was developed as Rich Site Summary and changed it's name to Really Simple Syndication. RSS is every bit as dull as it's name(s). I tried with every fiber in my body to write about it but it's just so damned boring that I kept getting distracted by the wonderfully useless and tacky time wasting websites out there.

Besides, building an RSS page just seemed like a waste of time, and not the good waste of time, and why can't someone just do it for me? Then there was Fark.

Fark.com brings you "fark headlines" from the New York Times, CNN, DesMoines Register, ABC News, Daily Star, Time, and a multitude of others. "Facebook considers adding 'Sympathize' button." got my attention and I started farking right there, or farking started right there, or started right farking there, what ever. And, I saved so much time farking I felt entitled to go back to those delicious time wasting sites that were so tempting.

So many people read the Huffington Post and The Onion that they're hardly worth mention. It's almost like saying you can waste time on Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest. In both cases a waste of time saying you can waste some time.

In addition to fark.com, here are some places not so common where you can go to waste some time.

Lifehack - Tips for Life  - Communication, Lifestyle, Money, Productivity, Technology and Work are it's topics and it's a good read.

BroTips goes from the insightful "if she doesn't text you when she's drunk you're not the one, bro." to the sagelike "getting a good deal on something you don't need isn't saving money, bro.".

Zergnet - Discover interesting articles - similar to fark.com if the "news" sources were all found at the check-out line of Jewel. Pinteresty in appearance and every bit as tempting as those supermarket tabloids.

TheChive - Probably the best site in the world - That's the claim anyway. If you're a girl from 18 to 23 who has posted "Selfies" you took in the bathroom thinking Mom and Dad didn't know, you're probably on this site. Funny is where you find it, and if you think train wrecks are funny this is a twelve car derailment off a tall bridge over a fireworks factory.

The Robb Report - Planning on winning the lottery? Need to price islands with mansions real quick? Have an extra space in the garage for that $1.2M one-of-a-kind car? This is where dreams happen. The same Robb Report it's always been only digital.

Dream big or stay awake bro, that's your call, and that's Cocktail Talk.

Thank you for reading,
