Cocktail Talk

Craig:

Welcome to CN Consulting's "Cocktail Talk".

Cocktail Talk is a casual monthly newsletter intended to arm you with amusing bits and bytes of information on whats happening in the computer world. Topics sure to break the ice and capture an audience at many a social or business event.

Cocktail Talk is archived on www.cnci.us

Currently, on Cocktail Talk - Super Bowl 2013

Super Bowl 2013 is over, and all that remains is what always remains, some of the best television commercials of the year. Doritos made us laugh, Budweiser made us cry, but this year's commercials were different. This year, some of the best of the best were "Crowdsourced".

The February 2010 Cocktail Talk discussed Crowdsourcing explaining it like this:

" It works like ebay in reverse. Instead of listing a waffle iron and taking bids, you offer money for a waffle iron and pick one from what you get. Instead of an Auction you have a Contest."

Wikipedia more eloquently explained it like this:

"The act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to a large group of people or community (a crowd), through an open call.

So who Crowdsourced and how?

Pepsi did. Pepsi sent an open call for pictures of people enjoying Pepsi products. Then they took the pictures and made them into the half-time introduction. Big deal, Lincoln did it too, and it's not really Crowdsourcing if your marketing geniuses do all the work.

Doritos did it with "Fashionista Daddy" and "Goat for Sale". Doritos fans actually created commercials and then voted on which should be used. Doritos has been Crowdsourcing for years. Maybe it used to end with fans just voting on which commercial aired, not anymore.

Quill did it, and if you live in Scranton Pennsylvania you may have seen it, with a "user" created ad called "Paper War with Cat".

Pizza Hut did it. Pizza hut took 18 fan created videos and did a mash-up of them for their Super Bowl commercial.

Shamelessly referring and linking to Cocktail Talk February 2010  (There, see that? I did it again.) is just an attempt to gain a little validation. I apologize. It's not like Cocktail Talk predicted the future of Crowdsourcing.

Anyway, predictions are merely throwing a dart at the wall, and at some future date drawing a bulls-eye around it. After this many Cocktail Talks, and a few years, it was bound to happen that something mentioned went somewhere.

Cocktail Talk, predicting the future, or not, but that's your call, and that's Cocktail Talk.

Thank you for reading,
