Currently, on Cocktail Talk - Tragedy Plus Time
Equals Comedy

Comics
say tragedy plus time equals comedy. I think tragedy plus time
equals Cocktail Talk.
A
few months ago while driving alone just after sunset I was
broad-sided in an intersection out in the middle of nowhere.
The
impact pushed my 5,500 lb Jeep Cherokee sideways
through the oncoming lane, over the concrete lane divider, through
the right turn lane and into a corn field. We came to rest over 100
feet from the site of impact. The Jeep was crushed with such force
the radio exploded out of the dash hitting me in the face and
adding another concussion to my resume. All this by a little two
door import going 35 mph. But, like I say, tragedy plus time equals
Cocktail Talk.
I
needed to call for help but my iPhone was no longer on the
passenger seat. I was looking for it when a good Samaritan
approached me. He called my number, nothing. I tried Pinging it
from my watch, nothing. Apple's Watch wasn't even paired to the
iPhone at that point. We looked and looked but nothing.
Deputy
Fife (not his real name) arrived and he also helped search. He
searched my Golf bag, day bag, mini cooler of bottled water, even
in the First Aid kit. He even searched me in case my iPhone 6 Plus
fell into my pants or something. It wasn't anywhere to be found.
Where was my iPhone?
I
logged-in to iCloud later that night, the "Find iPhone"
option dropped a pin on the map in a wrecking yard. Not anywhere
near where Deputy Fife wrote my Jeep would be taken, but who are
you going to believe? There was hope.
Three
of us searched the wreckage the next day, even trying to Ping and
call again. Nothing. There was a lot of stuff on that iPhone. If
you've ever lost an ID or credit card, you know where my concussion
affected head was.
Logged-in
to iCloud later that day Find iPhone still found a pulse at the
wrecking yard, Erase iPhone was able to remove my credit cards from
Apple Pay, completely erase the iPhone, and add a message that the
phone was lost and please call. There was hope. But still no
iPhone.
A
day later a surreal drive found me at Sprint where I purchased the
iPhone 6s Plus. Data was synced to the iPhone from iCloud and with
the exception of credit cards, passwords, and fingerprints, it was
all there.
I
am amazed the iPhone, trapped somewhere in the wreckage, still had
a pulse. I am thrilled with the technology part of that experience.
The "human" part, with Deputy Fife and Sprint Customer
Care, not so much.
Pairing,
Pinging, ringing (my head, not the iPhone), Find iPhone, Wipe
iPhone, buy iPhone, or not, that's your call, and that's Cocktail
Talk.
